Blog Post #1

My name is Max Jimenez, and I am a first-year commuter student attending the University of Tampa intending to major in New Media Production. I am originally from New York, although I have lived in the Tampa Bay Area for most of my life. My feeling about the first Art & Technology class and the semester were pretty positive going into this new course. This class sounds interesting, and it also sounds like it will be a challenge for me this semester. When this class is all said and done I expect to expand and improve my skills in creating projects in multiple formats so I can succeed in my major and various areas of interest.

I have been a fan of the New York Yankees for as long as I could remember. Although I love the Yankees, I do watch other sports as well, including basketball and soccer. I love to watch professional soccer, whether it be the MLS or the English Premier League. I love to attend live shows and sporting events. Whenever an artist that I like comes to perform in Tampa at  The Orpheum, or Amalie Arena I make sure to buy tickets.

I am not sure what to expect in this class but hopefully I am able to succeed in this class. I am looking forward to learning as much as I can in FMX 211. I hope to increase my knowledge about topics such photo, film, and performance. I really believe that this knowledge will help me to complete my major and become a more well-rounded person. Thank you for reading my first blog post for Art and Technology.

Blog Post - B5 (Music Movements)

Movements: Industrial Hip Hop/Horrorcore: Ho99o9 I chose the hip hop group Ho9909 (pronounced Horror) because they combine hip hop with a traditionally aggressive hardcore punk sound palette. I believe that their work (such as United States of Horror)  really blurs the line between genres by incorporating various elements to make their music. I consider that their work fits with electronic music because of their use of various computer-generated sounds (i.e. distorted programmed bass lines), and the use of both traditional live instruments (drums, guitar). https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7saY1yWyWbc Post-Punk: IDLES I chose the British post-punk band IDLES because I had heard their song Danny Nedelko  from their 2018 album Joy as an Act of Resistance. I consider that their work represents the modern take on punk music, and fits with technology because of the use spacious synth-bass sounds on the epic Colossus (from the same album). https://www.youtube.com/watc...

A6 - Performance Art

Chris Burden (Shot in the Name of Art) Blue Man Group  Pyotr Pavlensky (Sewed Mouth Closed) I chose these three performance artists because I found that to me they had several qualities in common. When you watch a performance art piece by these men, it arouses a strong first reaction in your mind, and pushes you to really question if what you are watching is truly art. I believe that the fact that their performance can bring you to question and explore their work makes what they do that much more special. For Chris Burden and Pyotr Pavlensky, I would say that technology is not an essential component to their work, because their most famous performances involve the infliction of pain on the human boy to make a point for their respective pieces. This is one area where the Blue Men Group differs from the other two, with technology being the tool that is most used for their performance art. Science and technology, the use of screens to display information to the audience, ...

Bluebeard's Castle (Assignment A1)

Max Jim é nez Professor Roundtree FMX 211 24 September 2018 Bluebeard’s Castle The opera I chose to watch was Bluebeard’s Castle , composed in 1918 by Béla Bartók, written by Béla Balázs and based on the French folktale “ La Barbe bleue.” As a result of a live stage performance being incredibly difficult to find, I viewed a German film version of the opera from 1963: Herzog Blaubarts Burg (Duke Bluebeard’s Castle) with English subtitles. The opera was altered from the original folktale in several ways. The opera version only contains two performing characters, Bluebeard and Judith. In addition to this, the way in which the story progresses and ultimately ends is quite different from the centuries-old folktale this opera adapted. In place of Judith being left to her own devices and ultimately discovering Bluebeard’s room with the corpses of his former wives, Bluebeard stays in his castle and gradually reveals his dark secrets to his new wife, opening the s...
